There’s no shortage of metrics you can focus on when evaluating the success of an automation project: - Time saved - Cost reduction - Error rate - Customer satisfaction - Process speed All of these metrics are valuable in their own way. But in my experience, not all of them deserve equal attention. Trying to optimise for everything at once often leads to more confusion than clarity. Over the years, I’ve learned that focusing on the *right* metrics, those that truly impact the way your business operates, makes all the difference. ## The Metrics That Matter Most When it comes to automation, I prioritise three areas that have a direct impact on the overall success of a business:   ### 1. Employee Happiness Automation should empower your team, not frustrate them. When your processes are streamlined, your employees spend less time on repetitive, low-value tasks and more time on the work that matters. Happy employees aren’t just more productive, they’re more engaged and innovative. They’re better equipped to serve your customers, contribute ideas, and bring their best to the table. Ask yourself: - Does this automation reduce unnecessary stress for my team? - Is it freeing them up to focus on higher-value work? If the answer is yes, you’re on the right track.   #### 2. Task Reliability One of the biggest benefits of automation is consistency. Tasks that used to rely on manual effort are now completed reliably and accurately. The focus is on ensuring that the right things happen at the right time. This builds trust across your team and with your customers. Consider: - Are critical tasks being handled with fewer mistakes? - Can your team rely on automation to take care of repetitive work without constant oversight? When tasks are predictable and reliable, your business runs more smoothly.   #### 3. Workflow Consistency Finally, automation should make your workflows seamless and easy to manage. A consistent workflow means fewer bottlenecks, less backtracking, and more opportunities to scale. Automation isn’t about replacing human effort, but rather creating systems that complement your team’s work and make everything flow. Reflect on: - Does this automation make your processes easier to follow? - Is it creating a clear, repeatable workflow that everyone can rely on?
